Leadership in the marketplace, buying and selling successful runners on behalf of clients, became a trademark of HIGHCLERE.
Throughout the 1980s, HIGHCLERE achieved international renown, as its sales graduates amassed racing success around the world. SLY MOON was named champion 2-year-old filly of 1983 in Italy; AIR DE COUR was named champion older horse of 1986 in France; SUCCESS EXPRESS won the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1; and CHARLIE BARLEY was voted champion grass horse of 1989 in Canada.
By 1995 the successes were numerous, punctuated by headline results. That fall, in partnership with John Crook, Morris purchased the dams, carrying in utero, future Hall of Fame champion SILVERBULLETDAY and future multiple stakes winner ARRESTED DREAMS for the remarkable price of $42,000 each.
In May 1996, STAR STANDARD, whom Morris co-bred with Louie Roussel, won the Grade I Pimlico Special. Also in 1996 came two Grade I-winning juveniles, Hopeful S. winner SMOKE GLACKEN and Oak Leaf S. winner CITY BAND. A year later, SMOKE GLACKEN would become HIGHCLERE’s sixth champion, when he won the Eclipse Award as America’s best sprinter.
Morris continues to fulfill his goal of breeding, raising, and selling the best. This list grows every year, punctuated by Champions and Classic winners, like SILVERBULLETDAY, the last filly to win the Eclipse Award at two and three; CAPTAIN STEVE, winner of the Dubai World Cup; SARAVA, winner of the Belmont S.-G1; and MINE THAT BIRD, champion 2-year-old in Canada and winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby-G1.
Morris credits the success of HIGHCLERE to his hands-on approach for both horses and customers. Morris lives on the farm, and is on-call for every aspect of the business. He is a traditional horseman, but open to exploring options and including new concepts, thus positioning HIGHCLERE and its clients at the forefront of developments in racing and breeding.
Jeff Morris is determined to make the future of HIGHCLERE as strong as its past.
